Disappointed - Steiner twisted the two chest straps during manufacture. Steiner twisted the two chest straps during manufacture and there is no way to untwist them so you end up with an uncomfortable twisted strap on your back when you wear this harness. Whatever happened to craftsmanship and quality control? This is such an obvious defect you would have thought that quality control would have caught the problem. Oh well I guess that's what buying in America is these days! Excellent Harness for Digital Camera The Steiner (German) Clic-Loc Harness is not only for Binoculars. We modified this to work for our Digital SLR Camera. It eliminates weight around the neck for those of us whom have a high quality heavy lens, battery pack, and super SLR. Other camera harness systems do not have wide straps or the solid build of Steiner.

Great little binos These binoculars are great. They are small enough to carry with you in a handbag, easy to use, and are good optical quality for the price, actually great quality for the price. Unlike some other binoculars I have used, these do not have any collamination issues and provide a full picture. 12x zoom is nice for getting up really close to your subjects. overall a really good buy

Burris Signature Select Binoculars 8x42 Md: 300280
From Burris

Burris Signature Select Binoculars 8x42, Already highly regarded because of their favorable comparison to European binoculars costing up to four times more, Burris Signature Series Binoculars proudly introduces the enhanced Signature Select lineup. Premium optical glass that is very low tolerance precision ground and polished insures super sharp, distortion-free viewing and every lens surface is broad band multicoated for a reflection- free image. Bak4 prisms are also precision ground and polished to low tolerance specifications which virtually eliminates any out of color-phase issues. The application of premium phase correction coating takes care of the rest. And, unlike most binoculars, the prisms are coated with silver rather than aluminum for the ultimate in light transmission. We improved focus calibration by placing the right-eye diopter adjustment on a lockable diopter focus rings directly behind the center focus wheel. With their generous eye relief, well-balanced field of view and extremely tight collimation specifications, Signature Selects are easy, comfortable and a joy to use. We've added durable user-friendly twist-up eyecups and objective lens covers that are there when you need them, out of the way when you don't and not easily lost. And, of course, just like the proven Signature Series, the new Signature Select binoculars are fully waterproof, fogproof, highly shock resistant and come with Lens Covers, Carrying Strap, and Case. Sturdy, lightweight, good quality These combine a sharp image, good optics, water and fog proofing, plus sturdy rubber "armor" with an amazingly light total weight. Good for wildlife and bird observation. Used them for a day hike recently, and they compared favorably with a friend's higher-priced Steiners, even in low-light conditions--and were a lot less weight. Built in Japan to Burris specifications, I understand that they have a lifetime warranty from a company with headquarters and repair facilities in Greeley, Colorado. I can't say anything about any other Burris products, but I recommend these.

In 1907, Fred Leupold set up a one-man shop at 5th and Oak streets in Portland to repair surveying equipment. He was joined by his brother-in-law, Adam Voelpel, and later by inventor John Cyprian Stevens, and the foundations for a century of success were in place. During Leupold’s second half-century, the company focused heavily on the sports optics business. Leupold’s presence in the hunting and shooting market expanded with innovative optics and features that are now legendary among hunters, shooters, and outdoors enthusiasts. Many of the industry’s standards--nitrogen waterproofing, the Duplex reticle, and more--were Leupold creations.
Exceptional binoculars, especially in low light I have now bought 3 pairs of these binoculars (for family members & friends) since they came out. I notice the most recent pair was "Made in China" whereas the earlier pairs were "Made in Japan". I have compared these binoculars side by side to two different Zeiss models many times the price of these ones and there is no doubt they outperform the many times more expensive pairs in low light conditions such as late in the evening. The rubber armour is helpful for hunting and they seem reasonably waterproof.

Binoculars for the theatre I bought two pairs of these binoculars. I gave one to my girlfriend. We had an opportunity to use them at a play recently and they really came in handy. I do wish that they were a little bit stronger. But they are classy looking and my girlfriend loved hers. I would recommend to others. Opera glasses seem sort of chintzy and cheap-looking BUT Work Well! I have received the opera glasses in black with the gold-colored trim and chain to hang around my neck. First of all, they look cheap, like a child's toy. They don't look like something a sophisticated opera aficionado would use. Not that I am pretentious about going to the opera with these - I just want the glasses to see the characters' faces as my season subscription seats are in the 2nd balcony and my eyesight is not what it used to be. Well I won't wear these around my neck until the lights go down - I don't want to be embarrassed about them. If they hold up well and actually work then I will feel less self-conscious about using them. Update December 14, 2009: I have just been to a concert of Handel's Messiah where my seat was way up in the rafters. I pulled out my opera glasses and I was able to focus in on the conductor, the soprano, the tenor, etc. They worked very well and I think better of the glasses now. I know the people sitting around me wished they had opera glasses too. I do recommend these glasses.

Good Binocs for a Great Price I searched all over the 'net for reviews of this binocular, but could find nothing, so I decided to take a chance, get the Carson 10X42s and review them myself. Here's what I found...the Carson is manufactured in China, natch. Fit and finish are good. The body is covered with a drab green rubber-like material. This serves the purpose of providing waterproofing (the description of these did not mention waterproofing for this model, but according to specs on the focus wheel, they are indeed waterproof) and it also makes it easy to get and maintain a secure grip on the unit. This is my first experience with roof prism vs. porro prism binoculars, and I appreciate the slim, lightweight design compared to the chunky porro glasses. Center hinge action is smooth and tension is just right. The focusing wheel is large and easy to adjust for critical focus. The right ocular also adjusts for focus, and it is stiff, so once you set it it will stay there until you want to re-adjust it. Both eyecups adjust for three positions for eye relief; just twist and pull up. Since I don't wear glasses when looking thru binos the eyecups stayed in the down position. Close focus for the Carsons is said to be 6'. I'd say that is about right, and you will get a clear, sharp image, but the closer you are to your target, the more you will feel your eyes stressing, and you won't see one well defined circle of view, but two overlapping ones. At about 12' and greater things get better faster. Collimation seemed to be very good in my sample. Non ultra close viewing is a real pleasure. The image is sharp and contrasty with a negligible amount of color fringing noted in high contrast lighting situations. The optics are specified as being fully multi coated, and the anti reflection coatings on the eyepieces and objective lenses are a deep blue-green/violet. The binocs seem sturdy and rugged. Included are a soft pouch with shoulder strap, a neck strap for the binos, and end caps. My final word on these glasses? They are "sleepers" and a big bang for your buck. I've seen these selling online for as much as $149. Even at that price it would be a fair deal. postscript 8/22/09: these are also fine binoculars for stargazing.

Definitely a step up from 7x35s I am an amateur astronomer in Maryland. I live in a small apartment, so I don't have room for your typical "starter scope". The 9x60's are a wonderful step up from the usual 7x35s that you might use for going to the ballpark. They really function best when on a tripod.

Typical Chinese 'hit-or-miss' quality control! I returned my first one to Adorama because when I looked down at the eyepieces in sunlight I saw the secondary reflections of the sun were different colors between the eyepieces. One or more of the glass surfaces was improperly coated, something that should have been caught by Quality Control before the binocular left the factory. Kudos to Adorama for handling the exchange in a timely manner, with no additional cost to me. I gave this second pair a thorough visual inspection and it appears perfect. The optical quality of this bino is almost beyond reproach, there is just a minute amount of chromatic aberration in some lighting conditions, and slightly undersized prisms. The aspheric lens elements excel, keeping the images 'TACK SHARP' until the edge of view, BETTER than my other binos, including my highly touted Nikon Monarch 8X42 ATB! The field of view is a bit narrow, but the fact that that entire field stays sharp more than makes up for it. I often wear eyeglasses when using binoculars, and the 20mm eye relief is fantastic (paltry eye relief kept from buying an expensive, high end Fujinon, I purchased this Pentax instead!). The 12X magnification allows these to be hand-held, but some shakiness will be evident. I usually mount them on a tripod, or hand-hold them as I lay back in a lawn chair, minimizing shake. Build quality looks and feels excellent, and I like the sculpted shape. I think the rubber covering would offer more protection against bumps if it was a little softer. The focus wheel is stiff, and it is slow focusing, taking a long time to travel through the focus range. The slow focus is an advantage for astronomy (my main use), it allows for very precise focusing. Birders and hunters will find the slow focus a hinderance. When focused for my eyes on deep-sky objects (infinity), the focus wheel is between the lock notches and focus will not lock. I think this "focus lock" and the "click-stop" diopter eyelens adjustment are unneeded marketing gimmicks, with no 'value-added' other than to one-up the competition. The large screw out eyecups are a big improvement over fold-down rubber eyecups. The low prism housings feel different but not uncomfortable. Put your hands in front of you like you are holding binos, now start turning your hands so the thumbs move toward each other, until they touch. That's what it's like to hold these. This bino is a little large and a little heavy, compared to many other 50mm porro prism binos. Accessories is where manufacturers cut costs, and Pentax is no different. Standard plastic objective lens covers are supplied. The neckstrap is unpadded and too narrow for the weight, my neck gets sore after several minutes. I will replace it with Op/Tech's E-Z Comfort strap. The eyelens 'rain cover' is next to useless. It is held in place by gravity, even with the bino hinge fully opened the eyecups do not grip the cover. I soaked mine in hot water to soften it, then lightly pressed the edges closer together; it now grips the eyecups. The case is my biggest complaint! It is a storage case only, not a carry case! It has no belt loop, shoulder strap, strap attachment rings, or handle. The only good thing I can say about it is it is large enough to hold the bino AND the strap! (Something I can't say about my Monarch's case, but it does have a belt loop!) I am considering Mountain Smith's Focus II (Lg) case, or one of Buckstitch Canvas's larger bino cases. Gone are the good ol' days when you would get a nice leather hard case that would last a lifetime supplied with a binocular. Based on my initial impressions, I can recommend this binocular, IF IT FILLS YOUR NEEDS. Just check it over good, and be prepared to return it if not satisfied. Whenever (if ever) Chinese quality control gets up to speed, their optics will rival anything put out by the best Japanese or German companies. ADDED: I completed several nights of informal astronomical testing of this bino. I won't go into detail on the testing, it is the same as in my review of the Nikon Monarch. If a bino gives good images of bright and dim night sky objects, it will do even better in daylight! This one is EXCELLENT+(PLUS), among the best I have EVER looked through! (I have used dozens of binos in my 40 plus years as an amateur astronomer.) The chromatic aberration is nearly non-existant when viewing the bright moon on axis (a tough test for any optic), the CA becomes more noticeable as the view is moved toward the edge. I will not hold this minimal amount of CA against it, after all, this is not a six hundred dollar instrument! But the bino does have prisms that are slightly too small for full light transmission; I see it when holding the eyelenses 8 or 10 inches in front of my eyes. Both images should be round, but there are flat edges here and there that are the edges of the prisms, where some of the light is being lost (this is one difference between these bargain binos and those that cost hundreds more). Still, I must say: THIS ONE IS A KEEPER! The image quality overrides any optical discrepencies. I give this binocular 5 stars as a marine, surveillance, and astronomy binocular; but perhaps 3-4 stars if focus speed, size, and weight are major considerations. Great binoculars We purchased this pair in December of 2007 for use at our condo in Naples for viewing the wildlife around the lake. These are superb glasses giving us great views of bald eagles, otters, turkey vultures, etc. All from a great distance. While they are a bit heavy, they are not too heavy for enjoyable viewing. I plan to buy another pair for use at our home in Cincinnati. You can't go wrong with these if you want detailed views of whatever it is you are viewing. Superior Optics As expected, this Pentax product is excellent value for the money. This model has superior sharpness and provides a bright field of view. IMHO, overall optics are A+. The ability to mount it on a tripod makes it great for using it for bird watching. For it's size it is not excessively heavy. Overall, well constructed. Water ressistance is another plus. The only draw backs I note are: 1. The cover for the eye piece is a one-piece design that fits over both eye pieces. One needs to "spread" open the binoculars in order for the eye peices to grip the cover. 2. The covers for the main lenses tend to come off when the binoculars are removed from the carrying case. Not a big issue...perhaps a hard case would have solved that issue. The lens caps them selves seem to fit snuggly.

Minox 8 - 14 x 40 Infinitely Variable Zoom, Water Proof Roof Prism Binocular with 4.6 Degree Angle of View at 8x, U.S.A.
From MINOX

Minox 8-14x40 ED Binoculars If you are looking for some of the finest glass out there and searching for the best value without sacrificing a thing, then you might want to consider these binoculars in the top 5 on your list. I have owned and viewed through a variety of quality glass; Steiner, Nikon, Bushnell, Leupold, Swarovski, Leica, Zeiss, and others. There is nothing missing here in these binoculars. I have throughly tested them since my purchase in snow, cloudy/dark, sunny, cold and hot conditions. They are one of the sharpest, finest, and most innovative binoculars on the market. There is no such thing as eye strain using these binoculars. All day viewing is easy and comfortable the entire time with and without eyeglasses. If you wear eye glasses like me then here is where you might really be interested and excited. Usually binoculars on the average are easier to use if you don't wear eye glasses. Not the case here, it is the same (with or without glasses). The eye relief is accurate as the specification lists at almost 20mm. This translates into very easy viewing with a wide field of view. A simple example may illustrate: I loved my Predator Steiner binoculars (eye relief was also supposed to be similar in specification), but on of the downfalls was if I wore my eye glasses not only was the view uncomfortable, but I sacrificed viewing area because of the tunneling effect. These Minox do not "tunnel" and are a lot of fun to use. The ED glass is fantastic. It is true to life, all surfaces are coated, and the colors are vivid . . . almost in 3D. Have to see to believe this. If you have not used ED glass, these are a great introduction to German Engineering. The main attention getter is the variable power from 8 to 14 power. The view as you zoom seems to almost get bigger and the light remains almost the same at full zoom. They do not get dark or fuzzy during the zooming process. Fantastic piece of engineering, especially when looking at wildlife in early morning or late evening when light is limited. It is really nice to spot a deer, elk, etc. and zoom in and seconds later know the size and detail without having to move to a spotting scope (animal moves, waste time, etc.). So if you were like me before and carried a spotting scope in addition to binoculars you might want to consider these to replace both of them. You won't quite have the zoom you have in a spotting scope, but most the scopes I've used in the $300-$900 range have half the zoom that is usable: meaning that you zoom in and the object gets darker or slightly out of focus. If you don't require the extreme zoom found in the $1,000 and up scopes then this binocular becomes quite competitive with your current set up. In the process you will save both money and weight/space if you are buying quality optics in both areas. They are also tripod adaptable. So if you shake, all you do is remove the cover on the front of hinge and screw in the tripod adapter found on the Minox website. They are a bit heavy (a little over 30 oz.), but this is due to the glass. Flourite glass is heavy due to the composition currently used. Almost any binocular you will purchase in the 40mm objective arena with ED glass will be in this category. If your binoculars are leaving you wanting, these are worth your time for a test drive.

H20 Binos 150842 September: The longer I own these binoculars the more I like them now that these have taken some trips. Fit and finish is as good as it gets, Optical qualities are very good. I should have bought 2 pair, uno por me esposa .... July: I needed a pair of decent quality binos for a trip to Alaska to observe whales and wild life. The weather was going to be lousy so I wanted anti-fog and waterproof features plus the nifty rubber armor coating found on quality items. After checking the specs from the many models available I chose the Bushnell H20 because this pair seemed to have everything and didn't cost a fortune for the few times they will be used, good choice. The Binos arrived in a few days in a rather small box, the roof prism construction sure makes for a small bino. Well how is performance, GREAT! The fit and finish is excellent, the extendable eye cups work perfect for me with or without glasses on. The 4 attached lense covers didn't give me any trouble and the rubber armor finish works like it should and gives a high touch of quality. Since the binos were carried in and out of a Warm Cabin into the chilly wet air I was worried about fogging up but there was non, the view was always crystal clear. The only slight negative is the neck strap, opt for a nice cloth one from a camera store with more positive adjusters since the stockers allowed the strap to slip loose and almost fell to the floor. Something to watch for and check now and then. Overall very worth the ~~$80, 4.5 stars ! I would buy another pair for my RV and day car. Why not 5 stars, well I don't know just how better a 5 star rated bino would be. Great binos for the price Good solid pair of binos. Wonderfully clear and easy to focus. I wear glasses and the extendable lens cups make the focus work for me.

Wind River Roof Prism Binoculars (Power: 8x42)
From Leupold

Well designed, built solid. 100% waterproof in any conditions. Bright, sharp sight pictures. Soft retractable eyecups. Shock absorbing rubber armor. Center focus.

Ideal binocular I purchased these binoculars to watch birds, and have used them happily for several years. I rate them 5 stars because the power is adequate to see birds with a good field of view at a reasonable distance with clarity and brilliance. The controls are quick and smooth, and the long eye relief allows eyeglass wearers to see the entire field of view--no tunnel vision. The close focus is about 8 feet so I can see the feather detail of nearby birds. Best of all, the glasses are unusually light for such a quality instrument, they are waterproof, and they come with lens covers which can be attached to the binoculars. The total package is very reasonable in price.

Sky Atlas for Small Telescopes and Binoculars
By Billie Chandler and David Chandler

This is the Atlas for sky observing beginners. The constellations are easy to locate, and all the objects in the atlas are within reach of binoculars or a small (2 inches or less) telescopes. The forward gives a basic overview of celestial motion. The selection of objects insures success for the beginner with the easiest to find objects in the sky. Many beginners do not know which objects are within reach of their equipment and end up frustrated and unsuccessful. This atlas describes if the object is viewable in binoculars, or a small telescope, or with the unaided eye. Descriptions of objects on a page are given on the opposing page.

Review "In clear prose, the Chandlers offer a vast array of knowledge from their own experience. ... A distinguished excursion." --The Book Reader, Fall 1996 About the Author David Chandler has taught astronomy, physics, and mathematics at the high school and college levels since the early 1970's. He has a BS in Physics from Harvey Mudd College, an MA in Education from Claremont Graduate School, and an MS in Mathematics from California Polytechnic University. He has published a number of charts and books designed to help beginners become successful in observational astronomy. Billie Chandler became interested in astronomy when her children were given a telescope by a relative. She subscribed to astronomy periodicals, took an astronomy course at a local college, and started looking into what could be seen with amateur-sized equipment. About the time of Halley's Comet (1985-86) she bought a 10" Dobsonian telescope and started observing regularly, first with the Idyll Gazers in Idyllwild CA, then with the Pomona Valley Amateur Astronomers. She is one of the first women in the United States to earn the Herschel award from the Astronomical League. She has sketched hundreds of astronomical objects at the eyepiece. Most of the descriptions in Sky Atlas for Small Telescopes and Binoculars are based on her observing notes. Color: Black Brand: Op/Tech Model: 1501012 Dimensions: .20 pounds

Much, Much Better Than Other Straps I have Used I got a Canon Rebel XT close to a year ago and soon realized that I was not going to like carrying it around all day with a heavy lens using the strap that came with it. So I bought another strap, but my second strap had hard plastic connectors which made it always get in the way when I tried to shoot. So after doing a little more research I found this strap. It makes even my 100-400, 3lb. lens bearable for hours at a time. Plus the strap fits the viewfinder cover that came with my camera that you use in order to keep stray light away from the light meter when your eye is away from the camera. This is a really great strap, I will never go back to stock straps again. WONDERFUL! Does exactly as promised! Hi folks, Just like to inform you of the wonderful product this strap is. It REALLY does make my camera (D80 with 18-200VR) seem soooo much lighter. The straps are broad and has anti-slip bottoms to ensure it doesn't fall of, even when I carry it on the side. Have I mentioned the foam material they use is truly something else? Have totally no regrets buying this. Strong recommendation. Great strap for DSLR's I bought this strap for my canon 30D and it is much better than the strap that came with the camera. Carrying the camera with the lenses attached, does not cause my neck pain. The strap is padded with neoprene which does not "dig" into your neck, and you can quickly disconnect the strap with the "quick disconnect" connectors. Even in the hot sun sweating, the strap does not cause discomfort. Note, I have not yet tried the strap with a heavy "L" lens, but it works great with the smaller lenes. ps, it also makes you look more "professional" if you care about such a thing...

It's simple design and great price is sure to win approval! The elastic version allows your camera or binoculars to be held tighter against the body. While still allowing the camera or binoculars to be brought up to the eyes for use.
Color: Black Brand: Op/Tech Model: Harness Black Dimensions: .35 pounds

Elegantly simple I purchased this harness for use with my Nikon D80 and a Nikkor 18-200 lens. The camera and lens are quite bulky and heavy and I needed a solution for hiking. This elegantly simple harness works beautifully. I can carry the camera all day hiking through the Rockies without neck or back fatigue, without the camera swinging side to side or front to back and yet with it quickly and easily available for use. When I bend down to examine something or simply tie my shoe, the camera doesn't fall into the middle of whatever I'm doing. A friend bought the harness for his Nikon Stabilized binoculars and has reported back that it works beautifully with the binoculars as well. I've been delighted with my purchase. A saved neck! I recently returned from a trip to the Amazon, and Lake Titticaca where I used the OP/Tech Bino/Cam Harness. It provided great support for a faily heavy DSLR with a 18-200mmlens. Use while walking was a joy, and in boats I did not have to worry about the camera swinging wildly about when boarding a boat, or when getting off. Several people on the trip wanted to know where to get a harness for themselves, for Cameras, or Binocculars. Camera Harness This was the only elastic camera harness I could find, and it is a good one. Plenty of room to go over a winter parka, yet adjustable enough for just a T-shirt. Simple to use and adjust.

Orion Otter Compact Binoculars These little binoculars are PERFECT for my application -- casual nature viewing and ocean-going ship watching. I would have given the transaction 5 stars, but for Orion's user-hostile return policy. The binoculars came with a very minor defect ... for which I would have exchanged them had Orion not required that I pay for the return shipping. Dennis Check for optical defects; needs steady hands The one Orion sent me had no QA sticker on it (unlike the 8x26 I had ordered that came in the same package), so I looked very carefully and sure enough there a defect in the right optical path. Called Orion's tollfree number; they were very helpful, courteous, and said that FedEx would email me a label. It never showed up in my inbox (I know Orion has my correct email address as they have since sent me other emails). So I called back and. again very courteously, they promised to snailmail me a FedEx free shipping label to return it. I assume that will show and the rest will be hassle-free.... I would have given this 4-5 stars (the way I will the 8x26 if it performs the way I expect it to in the field) but they shouldn't have shipped a non-QA'd binoc and they should have had a better understanding of what FedEx does and doesn't do for them. BTW, the 10x26 requires REALLY steady hands, arms, etc., so if someone in your family doesn't have those, then this is not for them.

Celestron 12x50 Porro Prism Binoculars The image through these binoculars is very sharp and clear. They are very high quality. They're somewhat larger than I expected them to be, so I can't comfortably carry them around my neck when I'm hiking, so they're not appropriate to carry into the back country. But very nice binoculars for all other purposes. Decent Optics Poor Construction You get what you pay for. While the optics on these binoculars are a value for the money the construction leaves a lot to be desired. Any heavy use of these binos is more than likely beyond its limits. Got caught out in a very light drizzle and the resulting fog in the binoculars rendered them useless for over a week. Good value for better quality binocs Great unit, far better quality than most others in the $ range

False Advertising! I bought the AMT NightStorm, expecting a high-grade optical device, but as it turns out I received a very poor piece of equipment. I was using it outdoors and the image quality is poor, and the images are distorted. Waste of money This is nothing more than a toy. Image quality is very poor, build seems cheap. Bought it when they were selling for $900 a couple months ago, can't believe they are $1400 now. Don't waste your money, the gen-3's will be this price soon.

Nice Monocular4
I needed to replace my broken compact binoculars. I decided to get Tascos Essential 10x25 monocular as it would fit better on my belt. I use it everyday for work (I do house inspections) and find that it is very nice to use. The image is large and clear and I love its small size.
It is quite powerful, for closer viewing I find I sometimes have to mover farther away! The rubber coating is useful as I've already dropped it a couple of times but there is no damage to the monocular or the image! The only negative is the soft case you get. Putting the monocular back into the case is sometimes a chore. A hard case or stiffer material would be better, but overall I am quite pleased with this item!

works great for me!5
I have used mine for over 4 years now. I work outside everyday rain or shine. I read electric meters for a living. My Tasco 10x25 is great for this job. This particular model focuses in very tight with a small feild of vision. For my job its great, But, most people wish to have a wider angle. If you want a wider angle dont buy this product. If your looking for something that will focus close and tight on an object this is great!!!

Works well in daylight5
I bought these to give to the neighbors kids, but it only works well in daylight. I tried it at a concert and couldn't really make it work for me in the dark.

Binocular Un - Flex3
The strap is useful. The binoculars come with a case that is to small. The binoculars don't stretch open enough so that the eye pieces can more comfortably rest on the eyes. The designer must not have taken into account that men have larger faces and eye spacing. Otherwise the binoculars are good.

These are REALLY NICE!!5

Trekking Safari Strap Pressure Free Easy Access Heavy DSLR/Binocular Neck Strap - Trekking TS12312
From Trekking

Trekking Safari Strap Pressure Free Easy Access Heavy DSLR/Binocular Neck Strap Two sets of Camera Mounting Straps.

  • Brand: TREKKING
  • Model: TS12312
  • Dimensions: .65 pounds

Cheaply Designed, Very Flawed2
I have a Nikon D300 and bought the Trekking Safari Strap as an easier, lighter way to carry my DSLR camera. Previously I had been using the ThinkTank Airport Antidote to carry my camera (this is a backpack case that you can connect the camera straps to the shoulder pads for easier carrying so that it doesn't put all of the strain on your neck, much like what the Trekking Safari Strap claims to do, but doesn't deliver on). The ThinkTank system is MUCH better. It is designed with more padding and made with better materials and stitching. It is comfortable but bulky (since it is a backpack and the Trekking Safari Strap is just a harness). The Trekking Safari Strap comes as a one size fits all, but this isn't true. I'm 6 feet tall and weight about 220 lbs. I had to set this as small as possible so that it wouldn't ride up on my neck and put all of the weight on my neck (like a normal camera strap would). Someone smaller, like the woman in the picture, wouldn't be able to use this at all. The Trekking Safari Strap is supposed to put the weight on your back, but it isn't designed properly to do so. If you look closely at the few pictures available you can see that the people wearing it are not really using it as designed. It cannot hold up a large, heavy DSLR camera using your back since there is no counter weight like in a backpack and the straps just go under your arms with only one adjustment per side. It needs a better designed harness.

I tried using several of the connectors that it offers but they all worked poorly. If you clip on to the metal rings at the top, it rides up on your neck like crazy and doesn't fit well at all. If you connect using the plastic straps and then walk around a little, it quickly adjusts to the lowest point and then puts pressure across your chest in an uncomfortable way. There just doesn't seem to be a way to get this thing to fit comfortably and stay there for any time at all.

Additionally, the straps are thin and don't provide hardly any comfort where they rub your neck and shoulders. There is only one adjustment for the strap (another bad design decision). It would also have been better if they had provided two ended clips for people that want to keep their current strap on their camera and only wanted to snap on this thing for occasional use. They do provide an extra set of clips.

Hardly any documentation is provided and what is provided has obviously been translated into English, quite poorly. Luckily, it is such a simple design that you don't really need much more to know how to use it, but this might frustrate some people.

I decided to send mine back. It is hardly better than an average camera strap and certainly not as good as the ThinkTank system. It is inexpensive, and that is why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. I would recommend avoiding this product. It is an interesting idea that needs a better design and better materials before it will be useful, comfortable and will work properly.

Comfortable for carrying a heavy camera4
I found this item well made and very comfortable to use. It makes carrying a heavy camera (and an optional pair of binoculars) easier since there is no strain on the neck. It is well made and has two small pockets for carrying a spare battery or memory cards. Two things I did notice that could be improved; it is a bit confusing to put on the first few times (fits like a shoulder holster) and it would be nice if it had more and larger pockets; otherwise I really like it. You cna set up two cameras since it comes with extra camera clip straps so you only need one strap.

Red LINE Binoculars

SImmons 10x50 Red Line Binoculars5
Truly one of the best set of optics out there at any price! I have used dozens of binoculars over the years, from Nikon to Zeiss; and the only major difference between the "top end" units and these are the price. The Simmons binoculars are excellent in optics quality, with individual focus capability, and excellent parallax correction built-in. the flexible union allows for most anyone, from a 10-year old, to a wide eyeset person to easily adjust them to "monocular view". My own Simmons Red Lines are older and 'roughed-up' a bit now, but let me tell you, they are tough! I have taken mine on many hunts, camp outs, and general forrays into the woods...and they, in all fairness, have been beaten, battered and abused far more than they ever should have...they still work like new! I don't know how 'waterproof or resistant' they were ever meant to be...or claimed to be, but mine have been rained on dozens of times...and they remained dry internally. For the money...you're getting ten-times what you're paying for. Taken care of, they really will last you a lifetime!

Brunton Eterna Highpower 15x51 Binocular
From Brunton

Naturally, the most powerful binoculars we make have a whole lot to offer. Designed around our stringent Eterna specifications, the new Full Size series is for those who want big glass in a rugged, ergonomic mid size frame. Not only is the objective sizable, but so is the power. Available in three powers--8X, 11X and the High Power 15X, the highest fixed-power binocular we build--these Eternas are jewels when viewing over long distances. The benefits of big glass are often overshadowed by the enormous weight of most binoculars this size. Not in this case. The Eterna Full Size series is lightweight and nimble, making each model desirable for the long haul. The Eterna brings you a sharp image with the help of BaK-4 prism glass, state-of-the-art phase coating and a readiness to get the job done when it counts the most. Aside from all the bells and whistles, this binocular is a trooper through and through. See why the Eterna Full Size is the total package for your most grueling challenge. The benefits of big glass are often overshadowed by the enormous weight of most binoculars this size. Not in this case. The Eterna High Power series is lightweight and nimble, making each model desirable for the long haul. Eterna E1551 has the highest fixed-power binocular in the Brunton line. Designed with outfitters and guides in mind. Very lightweight with an aluminum frame, just 32oz. Multi-step eye relief system that is eyeglass compatible. Phase coating, prism coating, and full multi lens coating make the colors crisp and details stand out. The High Power is just that, extremely powerful, but also comfortable with unbelievable clarity.

Brunton's highest fixed-power binocular, the Eterna High Power 15x is a jewel when viewing over long distances. Unlike most binoculars of this size, the High Power is remarkably lightweight and nimble at 32 ounces, yet still delivers the benefits of large 51mm objective lenses. The binocular also makes objects look remarkably sharp thanks to the integrated BaK-4 prism glass and the trio of coatings, which include state-of-the-art phase coating, Emerald Fire full multi-coating, and AL reflective coating. Even discounting all the bells and whistles, the Eterna High Power is a tough customer, with a nitrogen-filled alloy frame and ergonomic body armor that's both waterproof and fog-proof.

Specifications range from a 200-foot field of view at 1,000 yards to a 15mm long eye relief to a 3.4mm exit pupil. The focus system, meanwhile, gets as close as 11 feet. Additional features include a multi-step eye relief system that's eyeglass-compatible, tripod/monopod compatibility, and neoprene Bino Glove lens covers. The Eterna High Power 15x measures 6.7 x 5.2 x 2.3 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

A Steal and a First Rate Binocular5
It is long past the time when someone should have reviewed this binocular (for correct grammer, which I now abandon to convention). In a word, they are first rate. At the price, they are a great steal. I have owned much glass -- top camera lenses (Zeiss, Leica), top binoculars (the closest to these, a Swarovski 15x56) and top telescopes --and by comparison these are excellent because a) they are hand-holdable for me, b) very sharp, c) very contrasty, d) very bright, e) relatively light weight and d) optically and mechanically solid -- all for $500, I think the price is. The eyepieces are click-stop adjustable to balance eye relief and field of view (which is satisfactory [but not really outstanding], especially in light of the power). It is hard to say whether the binocular is sharp from center to edge because, properly set up, black out is encountered if one attempts to look over to the edge, but not if one doesn't. Periphal vision apparent sharpness is excellent. The black out is not a material problem because anything one concentrates on is moved to the center of view anyway. The prisims are phase coated and the optics are fully multicoated, with excellent current technlogy. The Bruntons are nitrogen filled, waterproof, and have a pleasant and comfortable non-slip outer covering. The right eyepiece is adjustable without click stops but doesn't move from the position set. These binoculars are in the league of the comparable Zeiss and Swarovskis, but at almost a third the price and with much greater hand-holdability and a life time warranty to boot. They are more color neutral and as bright as the Swarovskis and more similar to the Zeiss, but lack a bit of the super relaxed quality of the Zeiss and at times, the Swarovskis, but not by much. You have to fuss with the Bruntons more to get a similar degree of set-up and such quality. These binoculars are much more hand-holdable and ergonomic than the the Zeiss or Swarovskis and much lighter too, but still not a feather either, weighing in about 36 oz, as my best guess (I have no scales where I am). The Bruntons have a feel of good quality, with no cheesy or loose aspects, except the Brunton name/logo on the sides (cheesy). I do not like, also, the socks covers, but others might. I think they are too tight and not protective enough. The strap is excellent, aside from having the name of the manufacturer on it -- a general, pet peve of mine. Buy them. You'll like them. When you get comfortable hand-holding higher powered binoculars, it is almost impossible to go back to lesser powered binoculars for long. 7x50s now seem quaint to me. My Nikon Venturer 8x32 XL sits on a shelf, as do most of my other binoculars now, and I have about 10 pair currently on just my sailboat.

I love these binoculars for birding, marine use and even at spectator events, including ballet and opera. Braced, with elbows on a seat's arm rests, I can hand-hold these binoculars for the duration of the event. Their color quality is very neutral and pleasing, a quality of better, current optics, generally.

Modern, computer-designed optics with quality, current coatings, at all of the various price points, are much better than what we had 10 years or more ago, and the range in quality across those price points is also substantially narrowing as time passes. Granddad's WWII field glasses, with the beat-up leather case, just don't cut it anymore.
